Trezor.io/start – Official Start Page for Trezor Users

Clear, secure startup instructions for Trezor hardware wallets. Follow official steps to unbox, initialize, back up, and connect your device using Trezor Suite.

Official guidance

Before you begin

Read these preparatory notes before starting your Trezor device. Proper preparation prevents mistakes and protects your funds.

  • Only download Trezor Suite from the official source: trezor.io/start or the official app stores.
  • Choose a private workspace free of cameras and avoid using public Wi‑Fi while setting up.
  • Have a pen and the provided recovery card (or a secure backup medium) ready to record your recovery seed. Consider a durable metal backup for long-term storage.

What's in the box

Typical contents include your Trezor device (e.g., Trezor Model T or Trezor One), a USB cable, recovery seed card, and packaging. If packaging is tampered with or items are missing, contact official Trezor support before using the device.

Step-by-step setup (first-time users)

  1. Power and connect: Plug your Trezor into the computer or compatible mobile device using the supplied cable.
  2. Open Trezor Suite: Visit trezor.io/start to download Trezor Suite or use the web app if directed. Always confirm the URL and SSL certificate.
  3. Initialize device: In Trezor Suite choose Set up new device. Follow the on-screen prompts and device instructions.
  4. Create a PIN: Choose a PIN when prompted on the device. This PIN protects the device itself — do not store it with your recovery seed.
  5. Write down your recovery seed: The device will display a recovery seed (usually 12, 18, or 24 words). Write these words down exactly in order on the recovery card. Confirm the seed when prompted to ensure accuracy.
  6. Install firmware and apps: If prompted, update the device firmware through Trezor Suite and install any required coin apps. Update only via official Trezor Suite instructions.
  7. Add accounts: Use Trezor Suite to add cryptocurrency accounts and synchronize balances. Your private keys remain on the device; Trezor Suite communicates only signed transactions.

Important: Never enter your recovery seed into a computer or online form. Trezor staff or official support will never ask for your seed. If anyone requests it, treat it as a scam.

Restoring a wallet

If you have an existing recovery seed, choose the Recover wallet option in Trezor Suite and follow the device prompts to enter your seed words in sequence. Ensure words are spelled correctly and in the right order.

Security best practices

  • Keep at least one secure, offline backup of your recovery seed in a different physical location.
  • Consider a metal seed backup to protect against fire, water, and physical wear.
  • Enable passphrase protection (advanced users): a passphrase acts as a 25th word but must be stored securely — if lost, funds protected by the passphrase cannot be recovered.
  • Use a strong device PIN and change it if you suspect compromise.
  • Verify device screens for transaction details before approving any action.

Troubleshooting common issues

  • Device not detected: Try a different USB cable/port, ensure Trezor Suite is up to date, and verify OS permissions.
  • Seed word errors: Re-check spelling and word order. If unable to restore, do not proceed with risky workarounds; contact official support.
  • Firmware update failed: Retry via Trezor Suite and follow recovery instructions. If unsure, consult official documentation.

Advanced: passphrases and hidden wallets

Passphrases provide an additional layer of security by creating hidden wallets derived from your recovery seed plus a user-defined passphrase. Understand the risks: losing the passphrase means losing access to those hidden wallets. Use passphrases only if you fully understand how they work.

Privacy & telemetry

Trezor Suite may collect optional telemetry if you opt in. Review privacy settings in the app and limit data sharing if desired. Remember that blockchain transactions are public — use best privacy practices where necessary.
